APHA / Chesapeake Wayzgoose
Mike Denker's home & shop
Saturday, November 7, 2009
This is why we belong to the Chesapeake Chapter of the American Printing History Association. Conversing with good friends, eating good food, and putting ink on paper on a Saturday in the fall. We even had deer in the yard.
For lack of any better reason these photos are in chronological order as they were taken.

Stan Nelson and Suzanne Izzo looking over one of the many pieces brought by the members for scruitinizing.

Jim Walczak and Stuart Bradley.

Jackie Coleburn seems to be making her point to Jim Wilder who has his hands full. They are both probably drinking some of Mike Denker's homemade cider.

This intense conversation between Roland Hoover, Chris Manson, and Mike Anderson would likely have metal type as the binding agent.

Chapter president and host Mike Denker talks with Cynthia Hoover and Tray Nichols.

Greg Robison and Jill Cypher talking old printing techniques.

It appears that someone might have said something interesting enough for John Johnson to write it down.

Stan Nelson, Mike Anderson, Suzanne Izzo, Mike Denker, and Val Lucas enjoying the morning.

Five simultaneous conversations with the food closeby. Hmmm.

Stan Nelson, Chris Manson and Casey Smith.

Don't you just love those middle-of-the-bite photos.

Gathering for the meeting that is co-host Ellie Denker sitting on the floor.

The gathering for the annual business meeting with the photographer's second bowl of chili in the lower left.

Mike Denker explaining his idea for printing on his many presses following the business meeting.

Stan Nelson, Tray Nichols and Herschel Kanter.

Casey Smith of the new Masters Program in Book Arts at the Corcoran talking with Chris Manson.

Jill Cypher preparing for her demonstation and workshop in the Delaware Style.

Stan Nelson slaving away on the R. Hoe Washington iron handpress.

Jill Cypher explaining some subtle details about handrolling on wood type to Jim Wilder.

Mike Denker who has an amazing collection of woodtype with a couple of tables set up so people could print what they wanted.

Meant in jest this from Star Wars about someone who hasn't grabbed onto the Delaware Style. "Who's the more foolish: the fool or the fool who follows him." Nice to see a non-believer coming over to the Dark Side.

The iron handpress is alive and well and living in Potomac, Maryland.

A good view of the gathering in the Vandercook area of the shop.

Above (Franziska Walczak) and below (Pat Mason) a few letterpress wives remembering the good old days.
.

Greg Robison and Val Lucas talking beside Mike Denker's iron handpress. Nice.

Jim Walczak headed into the shop to slay the dreaded Delaware Style dragon.

Suzanne Izzo taking a spin on the Vandercook.

Ray Nichols had borrowed some woodtype from Mike Denker and repaid the favor with a creative specimen sheet appropriate for hanging in a print shop.

Ray Nichols talking over composing stick architecture with Ron Schwartz just prior to the "invasion of the purple hand," a printing subject to be taken up at a future installment of "Weird Things APHA."
All in all it was a wonderful way to spend a Saturday.
Ray Nichols was at this event and took all of the photos except the last one which was pleasantly supplied by Stuart Bradley
