Histories of Newark 1758-2008

The year-long project of designing the Histories of Newark 1758-2008 is done and Wallflowers Press has officially published its first book. The book celebrates the 250th anniversary of the founding of Newark, Delaware where both Jill and Ray live and where they have Wallflowers Press, their letterpress studio. Here are a few details:
• an edition of 1,000 numbered copies
• 288 pages
• hard cover wrapped in Arrestox black cloth and foil stamped in two colors
showing the King George II silver sixpence minted in 1758
• seventy-five stories
• fifty-six authors
• 1,409 photos including 3,767 current citizens printed in duotones (PMS 457)
• three and a half pounds
• cost is 20 cents a year


Above are two sample spreads showing the general layout of photographs and the citizen band that flows through every page of the book.


This is a coin (size of a dime) the features King George II on one wide (he signed the charter to allow the town to form a government) and the mint date of 1758 (year of the charter) that are supplied in the deluxe version of the book.
The deluxe version contains the book bound in black leather and foil stamped and a slipcase. Additional items will include the coin mentioned above, all of the ephemera we could gather related to the project which would be contained in a separate box.
