Jill Cypher
Lead Graffiti

With a background as a graphic designer spanning 25 years, Jill Cypher is now a designer/printer and partner with husband Ray Nichols in Lead Graffiti in Newark, Delaware.

Jill caught the letterpress bug during recent typographic trips to London and picked up the bookbinding/printing fever from Mike Kaylor’s infectious workshops. Jill and Ray began by collecting letterpress equipment and forming Raven Press, which they donated to the University of Delaware to promote the book arts.

Together Jill and Ray have conducted workshops for many students in letterpress printing (on both Vandercook and C&P presses), basic bookbinding techniques and paste paper design. Having recently created Wallflowers Press with two Vandercooks, an old style C&P, a Hohner and miscellaneous type via eBay or generous loans from letterpress friends, Jill (and Ray) hopes to continue doing workshops, as well as delve into new areas of interest: the fun and mysterious Guerilla Poetry Project, books like Histories of Newark: 1758-2008 (commemorating Newark, Delaware's 250th anniversary) and “Pig Tales” (as told by a former sacker at the Piggly Wiggly) among other things.

Jill is a member of APA (No. 803) and the Chesapeake Chapter of APHA. She has taken workshops with Susan Mills at the Center for Book Arts in New York City; with Alan Kitching of the Royal College of Art, London; Mike Kaylor of Inkling Press, Chestertown, MD; and with Claire Bolton at Alembic Press near Oxford, England.
